My wife was murdered by a friend. I am not going to dress that sentence up. I carried him with me for years: into my sleep, my work, my fatherhood. My life was hell for exactly as long as I carried him.
Then I forgave. Not because he deserved it. Not because it was okay. It will never be okay. I forgave because I was the one paying for the hate, every single day, and my son needed a father who was alive. Forgiveness did not free him. It freed me.
So when I sit with you and your unforgivable thing, you are not talking to a book. You are talking to a man who set down the heaviest stone there is.
“Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”Christ, at the worst moment there ever was
Three traditions that have freed millions, each carrying a piece of it. None of them is the answer. They are companions on a road you walk yourself.
The long session, about two hours. Every name, every debt, every stone you’re carrying, including your own name, which is usually the heaviest. Within two days, your plan is on your private page.
What do you actually want from them: the apology, the justice, the years back? We look at the truth together: the debt cannot be paid. The grudge is you paying it for them.
Self-forgiveness: the inventory of your own side. Amends where they’re possible, never where they’d wound. The letters get written: the ones to send, and the ones for the fire.
Built for where you are: your history, your land, your nerve. We choose the form, the words, the hour.
What stays true once the smoke clears. The daily practice going forward. Because seventy times seven means some mornings you set it down again. That’s not failure. That’s the practice.
Every evening, one line on your page: what I picked back up today, and what I set down again.
Grief and grudges are not ideas. They live in the body, and the body needs a moment it can point to and say: that is where I put it down. We design yours together, for where you are:
You hold it where you live, at an hour we set. And at that same hour, I light the fire here in the mountains of Peru and hold it with you. Two fires, one letting go.
No. Forgiveness is not approval, not reconciliation, not forgetting. It is putting down a debt that was never going to be paid, so it stops collecting interest from your life. You can forgive a man and still never let him near you again.
Most of this work happens without them ever knowing. The letters can be burned instead of sent. Amends are never made where they would wound. The Twelve Steps got that part exactly right.
That’s the stone most men are actually carrying, under all the others. It gets its own week. You will not be asked to pretend. You’ll be asked to put your own name on the ledger and walk it like the rest.
No. The Twelve Steps, the Christ, and the Course are companions here, not authorities: three maps that agree on the road. You don’t have to believe anything. You have to be tired of carrying it.
There is nothing to add. No new course, framework, medication, philosophy. The work is removing: the filth in the body, the filth in the mind, the distractions. When mind and body integrate with the spirit, we remember who we are in our divine perfection. It is time to come home to our hearts and do what is right, without permission or outside validation. This is the work I do on myself every day. My hope is to share the remembering with you, so we wake up together with the sun in our eyes and joy in our hearts.
